Isabel was born and raised in Colombia, a beautiful country located in South America. As a child, she and her mom moved around a lot. A routine part of life involved constant change and adapting to new environments and situations. Her Mom Carmen was her role model and inspiration of how a Christ centered woman should live her life. After completing High School, Isabel attended Universidad Nacional de Colombia where she studied Philology and Languages. Upon completing her degree, she was presented with the opportunity to move and work in the United States of America as a Spanish teacher for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools in 2009.

Isabel loves sharing her culture and heritage with students. She took students on international trips on three different occasions where students were immersed in Latin American culture and enjoyed learning about different cultures. After working 5 years as a Spanish teacher, Isabel left the classroom to take a position as a Family Advocate where she served as a liaison between families and the school. She led informational meetings, translated school documents/letters/newsletters from English to Spanish and helped parents to become more involved in their child’s school by developing relationships that benefited them and the school.

Later, Isabel decided to get certified as an EL teacher and went back to the classroom where she worked with elementary and high school students for 8 years. As an EL teacher, Isabel supported her students in their social-emotional learning needs, as well as their academics. The majority of her students were immigrant children with little knowledge of English. She guided and mentored her students in adjusting to American culture and supported their families by hosting Parent Nights, in which she shared information and useful resources that parents would need in order to help their children be successful in school.

Isabel has been actively involved in her church as an interpreter for non-english speaking families and she is also a part of the worship team. Her faith has played an important role in her life and career. Isabel firmly believes that as a Jesus follower, her life should reflect and pursue the qualities that Jesus taught to His disciples. She is honored to be part of the Urban Promise Charlotte team since her values align with the mission of this organization. Her goal is to help develop children’s character to be Christians who help their communities.
